Board Meeting WRPC’s next board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Gold’s Gym in Wenatchee on Wednesday, February 17. Everyone is invited. Update on Wolf’s Eye Injury
I can see clearly now...well, almost. After an overhanging dead branch injured my left eye while paddling up the Columbia last summer, I am almost back to normal. Had a 2 1/2 hour operation by a specialist in Seattle before Thanksgiving which repaired the partially detached cornea and with the help of sutures changed the shape of the pupil from an elongated banana form back to something resembling a circle or square. The great news is that the cataract which formed as a result of the trauma meant I got a new lens which now gives me better uncorrected vision in that eye than before the accident. So sometimes good can come out of a bad situation. See you on the river. The 2-3 foot thick grounded ice flow at the mouth of the Wenatchee is gorgeous...like paddling in the Arctic! New Boats in the Annex The Annex is an ever-changing landscape of boats. In addition to the 8-person rowing boats, Troy and Evan, you will be seeing two more crew boats WRPC has acquired (free!) from Pocock Racing Shells in Everett. The 8-person Pocock shell (1987) is currently in Tom Feil’s shop waiting for some patching, epoxying and gel coating. The other boat is a 4-person Vespoli crew boat. The Vespoli 4 is a heavy boat and you should use caution when transporting it. Stepping platforms and a pulley system are being investigated by the board. Midweek Paddle
The organized midweek paddle mentioned in the November newsletter has been changed from Thursday mornings to Tuesday mornings. The start time of 9 a.m. remains the same. Interested members meet at the Lindstrom Barn. This is a leisurely paced paddle open to all skill levels, providing an opportunity for beginners to get on the water with a group of more experienced paddlers. Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally alter this schedule so it is a good idea to contact either Kim George at kgeorge50@charter.net or 679-6247, or Yvette Downs-Matson at 782-4440 to confirm.
A Conversation with Tom Feil by Linda Stephan Tom has been a member of WRPC since the early 1980s and is WRPC’s second-ever Knight of the Rack. He has been very involved with the club over the years and has given a lot of his time and energy to help individuals and the organization. Most recently he has accepted a board position with WRPC.
Q: You have been a long-time paddling companion of Glen Frese. Can you describe some of your experiences? A: In June of 1995 Glen was injured in a biking accident. Late that summer he returned to paddling with new challenges. He started in a very stable plastic boat. As he moved up to a less stable boat, an outrigger was added along with a deck controlled rudder. At first, the dock was not handicap accessible so he had to be carried down the steps. Later a handrail was added by the club and he was able to make it down by himself. He has been along for the paddle almost every Saturday and Sunday. Glen has developed great balance and strength. Seasons and weather have created much diversity and some surprising adventures. One more difficult adventure happened in very cold weather. The river had frozen in an area we were trying to navigate. I was chopping through ice to form a narrow passage. Unfortunately, in the process Glen tipped over. I needed to quickly back up and get in the water myself to help Glen back into his boat! A chilling experience! Q: How were you involved in retrofitting a kayak for Ed Farrah? A: I purchased a double kayak originally used in the Outward Bound program. The youth sized cockpit was modified making it a foot bigger and the seat was taken out. Ed’s air cushion was added. I added a back rest and seat belt to be used as a chest strap. He looked very stable and we are looking forward to seeing him out again in this next NEW Year!!! Q: You are currently the boat storage manager for the club, but also it seems that you are the designated on-call person involved in the care and repair of our club boats. What can you tell us about that role? A: Virtually all of the club boats excluding the rowing shells have been repaired in some way, from minor to major damage, from rudder cables to small leaks. The Seal has probably had six pair of new cables installed. One kayak at one point was in two pieces after colliding with a tree! An unusual event happened sometime in the mid 90s. I was made aware of possible flooding because of high water. When I checked the boat house, the water was so high inside the lower area that the first three levels of boats were floating! I carried some of the boats upstairs and took home as many as I could fit on my trailer. Q: What has been a rewarding experience you have had? A: I enjoy the water but at the same time, I am aware of its dangers. I enjoy overcoming the difficulties and risks involved with the river. I have experienced the challenge of going out in different conditions and sometimes turning back. In all the years of paddling, I remember only once not going out at all because of the weather. The wind and waves has been the most usual cause for difficult conditions! Q: Do you have any goals you would like to see for WRPC members? Also, tell us about a great memory. I would love to see club members experience adventure beyond the local river areas. It would be great to do extended trips. A lofty goal would be to paddle every stretch of the Columbia (even over years!) I remember when Bob Derry built the first dock for the club. We mounted an outboard right to the dock and motored across the river to place it for use!

Note: As members find loopholes to the existing Lindstrom Barn policy, Tom reserves the right to plug ‘em! WRPC Jr. Rowing The excitement is mounting! David Bentsen is the program director of the rowing program that WRPC is putting into place. This is a huge undertaking and kudos to David Bentsen for stepping up to the plate. You will obviously be hearing much more about this in upcoming newsletters. At this point, the focus is on development of the junior crew program. It is anticipated that there will be a junior boys coach, junior girls coach, and a masters coach. At this time, coaching staff includes Jim Dahl, Bruce Schott, and Anne Hessburg, time permitting, as well as Sarah Grim and Kathryn Stevens, both of whom have enrolled in a Level 2 coaching course. If any members feel they have a special niche they could help fill, please contact David or simply come to the next board meeting. It would be a great opportunity for members who want to get into the action at the outset of a new chapter in WRPC’s history. New Newsletter Editor . . . Many of you have already met Kathryn Stevens and will remember the wonderful article she prepared for the Wenatchee World on crewing in Wenatchee. What you may not know is that she was also a coxswain for Gonzaga University’s crew program. And now she is going to be the new newsletter editor for the WRPC newsletter! We are very fortunate to have her on board.
Do you have anything newsworthy you think should be shared with our readers? Any special trips you’ve done? A boat you’re trying to sell? Upcoming events or reports of completed events? Simply send Kathryn an email containing the article you’d like published. Please be aware that Kathryn is new to WRPC and she will need a completed article sent to her (as opposed to cryptic phone messages, conversations in passing, or "knowing" something needs to be published). Kathryn will compile the newsletter and then send it to Carrol Watson for distribution.

Next Board Meeting WRPC’s next board meeting will be December 9 at 7 p.m. at Gold’s Gym, Wenatchee. Everybody is invited.
New Officers, Board Members Skip Johnson has graciously accepted a second term as WRPC President. Kim George is WRPC’s new vice president. Larry Tobiska is the secretary/treasurer (non-board capacity). New board members are David Bentsen and Linda Stephan. Please see the “who ya gonna call” section of this newsletter for a full listing of current positions with WRPC.
Tom Feil was elected a “Knight of the Rack.” We’ll have more about this in the January newsletter.
Clipper Tripper Canoe Peter and Joanne Hill donated a canoe to WRPC earlier this year. Here’s what Peter had to say about it:
I'm smiling ... the boat replaced our original Alumacraft "indestructible" turned into a crescent-roll by a windstorm and an intervening cherry orchard a number of years ago. Former lake paddlers and flat-landers from Wisconsin, Joanne and I have experienced numerous "baptisms" with this boat on the Wenatchee River (from personal participation and as "loaner" for various Ridge-to-River races, and on friends' and family day trips), and also "in" McLoughlin Falls and Janis Rapids on the Okanogan. As far as river use, it seemed to prefer spending as much or more time under the water as on top! Friends borrowed it for a week on the Bowron Lakes in BC, and had nothing but praise for its performance.
It is a fast, flat water boat, and after repetitive, painful lessons, convinced us it needed more skill and experience in white or turbulent water than we possess. We have repaired it on more than one occasion and put Kevlar skid plates at bow and stern, as well as D-rings for lashing cargo. It will provide a good fit for use on the Columbia or nearby lakes by couples, families, and competitors that belong to WR&PC. Just stay away from submerged structure and rapids, or you'll know why it deserves a nickname like "Stone Magnet" or "Boo-Boo Canoe." :-)
Note: At the time of this newsletter, the canoe is in Tom Feil’s shop for repairs but we’ll let everybody know as soon as the canoe is in the Annex and available for use. J
What a Relief Have you ever found yourself quickly making your way back to the dock, gingerly trotting up the hill to the restroom in mild desperation, giving the door a forceful pull, only to find that it is locked for the winter or for some other unknown reason? Those days are over. Restroom anxiety has been conquered due to the addition of a Sani Can in the annex area. Find it on the northeast side of the building next to the trailer. This popular little hut will be serviced on a regular basis; however, if you notice a problem that needs to be addressed immediately, please contact Kim George at (509) 679-6247 or kgeorge50@charter.net.
New Years Day Paddle/Row A longstanding tradition for WRPC! Please come down to the Lindstrom Barn and join like-minded rowers/paddlers at 8:30 a.m. on New Years Day. Hot chocolate will be available. A very fine way to start off a brand new year.
Rowing News A rowing story was on the CBS Evening News late last week. The subject of the story, Aeriel Gilbert, is blind. She competed earlier this fall, along with other members of the U.S. Paralympic Team, at Row for the Cure in Seattle. I hope you enjoy the story. Here is the link: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5637224n David Bentsen
And here’s a wonderful link Tina Rieman sent that some of you may not have seen: http://www.itvtheboatrace.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Video/0,,12539,00.html
WRPC has very successfully finished its first crew season with our two Vespoli rowing shells, Troy and Evan. On Saturday, November 21, both boats raced against each other from Sellars Bridge to the dock. Troy, coxed by Kathryn Stevens, finished first with a time of 18 minutes, 59 seconds, followed closely by Evan, coxed by David Bentsen. The sixteen crew people who participated in the race included Kathleen Jackson (stroke), Sharon Lunz, Skip Johnson, Dan Garrison, Katie Hershey, Lori Ksander, Dave Hyde, Larry Tobiska, Linda Stephan (stroke), Joe Palmer, Tom Feil, Eric Dilling, Loraine Hohnstein, Terry Peters, Joe Morrison, and Kim George.
Thank you, Kathryn, for such a splendid article in the Wenatchee World and the spectacular video clips you put together! For those of you who haven’t seen them, simply go to wenatcheeworld.com and click on “videos” and you’ll see Kathryn’s beautiful video clips as well as how much fun we’ve been having with these boats.
There are a lot of people keeping an eye open for a men’s midweight “4” crew boat. It would be fantastic to get one of these. Please keep looking!
Sharon Lunz has volunteered to create a google docs web site for crew people. This will allow rowers to go to a web site and sign up for rowing on established dates. Thank you, Sharon. Adult rowing will probably start up again on a regular basis in March. Because of higher expenses associated with rowing, an additional surcharge for people who participate in crew rowing may be put in place next year.
A committee, comprised of Loraine Hohnstein, Jim Dahl, Larry Tobiska, and David Bentsen, is working on developing a youth rowing program. Some of the things being discussed are having a “Learn to Row” day or two in which any youth between the ages of 14 and 18 may receive training and orientation about 8s. This might be followed by a “camp” of at least one week, and finally a regular fall program of rowing. Jim Dahl will provide a launch and coaching for safety.
Drifting . . . Estimated costs for landscaping/building improvements to the Annex next year could potentially run three to four times what WRPC currently has available in its treasury. WRPC’s first priority of spending for 2010 will be Annex improvements and secondarily for boat improvements and acquisition.

WENATCHEE ROW AND PADDLE CLUB DUES AND FEES POLICY
Revised December 2009
1. DUES Dues for membership in the Club are $75 per year for individual membership and $100 per year for family membership. New members pay a one-time initial fee of $100 in addition to the annual fee. The membership and boat storage year runs from January 1 to December 31. Dues statements go out in December and must be paid by January 31 to maintain continuous membership. New members joining on October 1 or later will pay one-half of the yearly membership fee for that year.
2. STORAGE Upon entering or vacating a boat storage space (slip) in the boathouse, yearly storage fees will be prorated on a monthly basis. Slips must be active on the sign-out sheet a minimum of 24 times per year in order to maintain the $75 storage fee. Slip storage fees shall be paid by the membership assigned to the slip. The Slip Supervisor shall have the power to make immediate decisions about the manner in which boats are stored to avoid hazardous or troublesome conditions in the boathouse and these decisions shall be accepted as a condition of storage.
3. FAILURE TO PAY DUES/STORAGE In the event a person fails to pay dues for membership, his/her name will be taken off the mailing list and he/she loses all rights of membership. Membership dues must be paid to qualify a person for a boat space. Any money paid goes first to membership dues and then to fees for space.
Any member may permit an individual guest to accompany him/her in use of club facilities, including boats, not more than three times per year as to any one guest; provided, the guest is signed out and supervised by the member.
If a person who has a slip in the boat house fails to timely renew their membership and pay their storage fees, he/she shall be given one reminder notice, entitled “Notice of Forfeiture of Space”, mailed to them, certified mail, at the address they have provided on their last membership application form or change of address given by them to the Secretary. The reminder notice will state, among other things, the amount owed plus a $10 late fee and that if the defaulting person does not make full payment of the amount owed and late fee by 15 days from the date of the notice, their space rights will be automatically forfeited. If the default is not cured in full by the time specified in the Notice of Forfeiture of Space the boat of the defaulting person will be removed by the Club from the slip it has occupied and the next person qualified for that space will have the right to occupy the space forfeited.
After a boat has been removed by the Club from its slip because of nonpayment, the Club will store the boat in question and give the owner notice to remove the boat and provide access at a reasonable time to do so. If the owner fails to remove the boat from the boat house within thirty days of the date of the notice to remove the boat, (and it shall be the burden of the defaulting person to make reasonable arrangements with the Slip Supervisor to remove the boat) the Club shall have a storage lien against the boat for twice the normal amount of space rent, i.e. $6.25 per month calculated from the 1st of the year in which there was failure of payment plus any costs of sale. The boat may then be sold and this lien may be foreclosed according to the procedure set out in Chapter 60.10 RCW Personal Property Liens--Summary Foreclosure.
4. WHERE BOATS MAY BE USED Club boats shall not be transported away from the immediate vicinity of the boathouse, i.e. they shall not be carried by vehicle to some other location, without the prior approval of the Board. Club boats may be paddled/rowed to any place attainable from the boathouse but may only be used in other waters with prior approval of the Board for use in club sponsored regattas, for example.

www.wenatcheepaddle.org Board Meeting
WRPC’s next board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Log Cabin, corner of Second and Chelan, on Wednesday, November 18. Everyone is invited.Year-round Paddling
This past summer a group of paddlers began meeting up on Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. for a leisurely paddle on the river. The idea started with a request from a new WRPC club member for some guidance in becoming familiar and comfortable with paddling and it grew from there. Though participation has dwindled with the change of the season, three of us plan to continue with this weekly event year round. We would like to extend an open invitation to any interested members. It is a great opportunity for a social paddle or to gain a level of confidence in the company of more experienced paddlers. For more information, please contact Kim George at kgeorge50@charter.net or (509) 782-1193, or Yvette Downs-Matson, phone (509) 782-4440.A Club Double Rowing Shell!
Alden is a longtime East Coast company and their boats are seen here on the West Coast too. They are well built, sturdy, and yet quite lightweight. Malcolm and I purchased the boat seven years ago, planning to car top carry it to many bodies of water. Despite winds that can quickly come up, the Alden’s stability makes it fun to row anywhere with no worry of tipping. We used the boat on the San Francisco Bay, launching it at the Berekely Marina. How exciting to see the San Francisco skyline from the Bay and be almost in the middle of the city rowing away in a double 18-foot rowing shell! Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon, was a great place to row going out under the bridge toward the ocean, or up the river to Toledo. Many happy days were spent dodging crab boats and pots and watching Pelicans dive for fish all around the boat Bay seals and sea lions kept us company! The Columbia River has been a wonderful body of water to row on too, with the change of seasons, beautiful colors, and even through snow and ice. I am so glad the Alden has found a good, safe and loving home. Thank you, Loraine and Karl, for helping me get the boat cleaned up, into the Annex, and ready to row! Please remember that the knobs that hold the rocker arms should be stored in the red pouch found in the small hatch. Happy rowing! Kathleen JacksonLindstrom Barn Boat Storage
With the Annex now a reality, boat storage is available for all WRPC members. Accordingly, boat storage in the Lindstrom Barn can now be more specialized and focused. At the beginning of this year, six categories were identified and prioritized for placement in the Lindstrom Barn.
(1) Members who have a severe, permanent disability will receive first placement priority.
(2) Knights of the Rack. Two members have earned this distinction.

The primary focus for WRPC in the coming year will be landscaping and building improvements—a huge undertaking!
Three roll-up doors have been installed on the Annex building.
Meetings are underway discussing formation of a youth rowing group.
The Lyden Tree parking lot is anticipated to open back up this week after parking stripes are completed.
The Jr. Ridge to River Race is on for 2010.
WRPC had approximately $5,000 in additional revenue this year from increased membership.
Next Board Meeting WRPC’s next board meeting will occur on Wednesday, September 16, at 7 p.m. in the log cabin on Second and Chelan. Everybody is welcome.
OPEN HOUSE The Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club would like to invite you to attend its first open house! The open house has been arranged to provide the public and interested parties with an opportunity to view the Annex and show off our existing boat inventories. See where the Annex is today and where we hope to be in the future! You will see the proposed design plans for landscaping, as well as proposed building modifications and you will have an opportunity to discuss the plans with the WRPC project team. Share any ideas or suggestions you may have! Refreshments will be served. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 10:30 to 12:30 NEW BOATS There are two 56-feet rowing shells sitting in the Annex – Troy and Evan. These eight-person boats were acquired from Western Washington University and made their debut on the Columbia River on September 6. So far, there have been six outings in these boats. The really spectacular news is that the City may be building a dock large enough to launch these eights AND a shed dedicated to storage of these boats! How fine is that!!

HEADS UP The City may be doing some work in September installing a water main through the Annex grounds. Every effort will be made to keep a path clear for people transporting boats.
Jay Bender donated a few small items and, with the help of Bob Derry, installed them at the Lindstrom Barn. To help deter vandalism and attempted break-ins, a video web-cam was installed under the eave, pointed in the direction of the lower door. It senses motion and rotates slowly back and forth with a blinking red LED to let the "perps" know it is capturing their image. We'll see how long it takes for some miscreant to throw a giant rock at it. Perhaps some sort of protective cage for it will be required (any volunteers?). They also installed a small set of inexpensive solar powered lights for the basement room (full installation and testing not yet complete at this writing).
The phone number for the police (RiverCom) has been posted just inside the doors of the Lindstrom Barn and the Annex. Please call that number if you see anything serious.

A few thoughts from Wolf Mueller I love kayaking and I try to get out on the river as often as possible. I've been kayaking on a regular basis for about twelve years and yesterday it hit me - literally -- that we can sometimes become too complacent and we're not as aware of the risks we're taking as we should be. I was paddling up the Columbia next to the bank near the mouth of the Wenatchee under a large maple, and I decided to paddle under a small opening on the overhanging branch. The front of the kayak caught on a dead branch and pulled the branch forward, creating spring-like tension. The branch then released, hitting my left eye. I was stunned. There was no pain but there was also no vision left in the left eye. When I opened the left eye, I was staring at a white screen, nothing else. I paddled back to the boathouse and drove to the Eye and Ear Clinic to see my eye doctor. We found that the iris was torn which caused bleeding in the eyeball and therefore lack of vision. The doctor ordered bed rest with no paddling or walking for two weeks. Both of those, of course, are activities I really love to do. I am now taking five different eyedrops with the hope that the vision will return at some point in the future. So be careful out there on the water and I hope to see you on the river in about two weeks in August. So, take care, bye.
NEW BOATS WRPC now owns a second double kayak, acquired by donation from Kim George. It is a Valley Aleut II, 22' long, 26" wide and it weighs 90 lbs. You will find it in space number 3 of the Barn. This boat has an interesting history as it came from the east coast where it had been used in the Outward Bound program. Somehow it ended up at the program's Mazama base camp last summer along with some other surplus equipment. You'll find it to be a very stable boat, yet it glides along with surprisingly little effort. Be sure to check it out.
It's possible that WRPC may be acquiring two kayaks from the Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club. Jim Heinlein will be bringing the boats over to Wenatchee and Tom Feil will check them out. More about this later.
WRPC has acquired two Vespoli 8 rowing shells (Troy and Evan) from the women's crew team at Western Washington University. Pretty exciting stuff! Bob Derry has made two great boat racks and an oar rack for these boats. Thank you, Bob, you are truly a Knight of the Rack.
BOAT MAINTENANCE No matter how careful we try to be, club boats get damaged. Or problems will occur with our boats from normal wear and tear as the boats age. It just happens. But bigger problems arise when damage or problems with a boat aren't reported. Please, if a boat gets damaged, or if you notice something wrong with a boat, report it. Tom Feil should be notified about any damage to kayaks or canoes. Larry Tobiska is the contact person for any damage to rowing shells. Contact needs to be made directly to one of these two individuals. And if you could leave a note on the boat itself letting other members know the boat is out of commission, that would help the next person know that the boat shouldn't be taken out until it's been repaired.
Boat Carts Four carts are now in the Annex for members to use to transport their boats to the dock. They'll come in very handy for transporting the heavier boats. If you do use a cart, please place it into the Lindstrom boathouse while you're out on the river. Then when you're done paddling, please take it back to the Annex and leave it there for the next paddler/rower. Anyone? SURF SKI FOR SALE. Valhalla, with carbon fiber Barton paddle. $800 for both. Contact Jay Bender at jay@jaybender.com or (509) 433-1090. (Jay just bought a Maas rowing shell and he's planning on doing some rowing on Beaver Lake in the Ozark Mountains in northwest Arkansas.)
WEEDS. There are weeds at the Annex waiting to be pulled! Some are pretty big and very tenacious. If you should happen to have a little extra time on your hands, perhaps you could swing by and pull some. Work gloves and garbage sacks are just inside the Annex door. (There's even a claw hammer to use on some of the more vexing weeds.) Bags of weeds can be left inside the Annex.
SKYLIGHTS. As some of you may have noticed, the skylights on the Annex roof could use some cleaning. Doe anybody have access to a 40-foot man-lift? Just asking! Or does anybody have any other ideas for getting the job done safely? Please contact any WRPC officer or board member if you think you might be able to accomplish this cleaning task.
SIGN: Does anyone happen to have "DO NOT BLOCK DRIVEWAY" sign laying around we could use to attach to the Annex gate entrance? Would you like to make one?
Spanish Castle Kyle Flick wrote in saying there were nine of us who showed up for the Spanish Castle trip on July 18; three double kayaks, a canoe and a single kayak. We stopped en route to Malaga so Mark Behler could tell us the Indian legend of the Owl Sisters. Once we found the launching area for the boats, we began the journey to Spanish Castle around 10:30 a.m. The warm weather was tempered with a nice breeze to accompany us to our first stop on the river. The Indian pictographs are now protected by a chain link fence. After we got back into our boats, we were treated to wonderful sightings of wildlife: coyote, a herd of bighorn sheep, blue herons (who were companions on the paddle back too), along with a multitude of waterfowl. Once at Spanish Castle, we had lunch, and Mark showed us pictures of what the hacienda looked like not so long ago. He further recounted how the daring boat captains of the day had to maneuver up the river before the dams were constructed. Afterwards we paddled up river and arrived back to our cars by early afternoon. An enjoyable and insightful trip that allowed us to escape back in time as well as from the day's heat. The double kayakers included Kyle Flick and Gabriel (my son), Freeman Keller and his wife Sherrill, Jerry Rappe and his wife Teri. In a canoe were Mark Behler and his son Andrew, a grad student at Central doing work in ESL. Sherrill and Freeman Keller wrote in saying that the bighorn sheep were absolutely stunning. It was the one day Freeman forgot his camera and regretted it. Freeman also seconds Kyle's comments about Mark and his knowledge; Mark commented that many of the old Indian legends were oral and passed down through story telling and he very much keeps that tradition by retelling the stories. Fascinating! A note of caution about the pictograph site--there is a significant amount of poison oak so care is in order. According to Mark, Fish and Wildlife actually introduced the stuff as added protection for the pictographs. Effective, and quite creative of them! Bridges and Back Fourteen people participated in this event on July 19. For the first time ever, participants could choose between doing the normal Odebashion-and-back event (Bridge & Back), or they could choose to do the Odebashion-Sellars-and back route (Bridges & Back). Temperature was in the high 70's with a very light wind.
First place for this event went to Linda Stephan and Tom Feil in the Huki. They came within 9 seconds of their predicted time to do a Bridge & Back. Second place went to Isak Gasi who came within 2 minutes, 30 seconds of his predicted time. Third place went to Dick Feil and Jim Doyle who came within 2 minutes, 40 seconds. Others who participated in the Bridge & Back were Kim George, Glen Frese, Don Essick, Bridgette Ranne, and Chance and Sandra Harris.
Sean Koos and Larry Tobiska chose to do the longer Bridges & Back route. Sean predicted a time of 61 minutes, 30 seconds, and actually completed the course in 67 minutes, 20 seconds. Larry Tobiska predicted a time of 90 minutes and completed the course in 76 minutes. FYI, all rowers Here's an email recently received by Skip Johnson: This message is to introduce you and your club to us, the Palouse Community Rowers. We're a largely masters group who live in the Pullman, WA/Moscow, ID area and row on the Snake River. This is our 4th year of sweep rowing and we've just begun sculling this summer. For the past couple of years we've held a small informal regatta with the Coeur d'Alene rowing club in mid-August. This year the regatta will be held at Fernan Lake, ID hosted by Coeur d'Alene. We'll be racing fours and eights and would like to invite your club to join in. Knowing this is late notice though, we'd especially like to invite you to next summer's regatta that we will be hosting at Wawawai Landing. We don't have our own web page yet but if you'd like to know more about us, check out http://row.wsu.edu/myFiles/Mens_Crew/palouse.html and send us an email! UPDATE ON THE ANNEX A lot of hard-working individuals have invested a huge amount of time into sprucing up the Annex and making it ready for occupancy. The floor of the Annex has been sealed. What an improvement! Three doors are in the process of being installed on one side of the Annex boathouse. These will be slide-up doors much like you see on storage rental units. A preliminary site plan has been completed by Erlandsen, and Rich Congdon and Skip Johnson can now start working on ideas for exterior renovation of the Annex. The primary focus will be the landscaping but changes to the Annex building itself could include gables, overhangs on the doors, lighting during the evening, Kim George and Loraine Hohnstein have been working on converting the loft area of the Annex into an office/sitting area. The beautiful area rug in the loft area was donated by Kim! Kim is still hoping for kayak paddles (three, similar in size/shape) that could be used as legs for a coffee table. If you have any surplus paddles to donate, please contact her at 782-1193 or sweetcontent@verizon.net. There's been a steady trickle of boats into the Annex but ample room remains for more boats. There will be a $75 charge for the first boat and $50 for each additional boat. Please visit the WRPC web site or contact the boat slip manager, Tom Feil, at 2canoe@charter.net or 884-3765 if you need further information. NEXT WRPC BOARD MEETING WRPC's next board meeting will occur on July 15 at 7 p.m. in the log cabin on Second and Chelan. Everybody is welcome.
GREEN POWER WRPC member Jay Bender has purchased a 15' Bayliner outboard boat hull in good condition, along with a trailer. To learn more about electric boat design, he will be donating these items initially to the AVI Tech Group. The AVI Tech Group might take this project on as a demonstration of the possibilities for electric boats. The proposal is to build an electric boat capable of several hours of slow speed use and idling with an additional capability of higher speed (25 mph or so) for a shorter period, perhaps 10 to 15 minutes. A DC electric motor (perhaps two) may be installed. Ultimately this boat could be donated to WRPC for possible use as an electric rescue boat. WRPC supports development of an electric rescue boat.

Please: Remember to sign out each time you use any boat from either boathouse. These sign-outs will be used for placement priority in 2010. Remember to sign out on the day that you take a boat out rather than signing out retroactively. Remember to use your full name when signing out. Several members have identical last names and at least a first initial is needed so that credit can be given for the sign-out. WESTERN CANADA GOOSE CAPTURE Many of you probably read the recent article in the Wenatchee World entitled, "Stealthy volunteers catch grounded geese." The article described "20 volunteers who converged on Rock Island Golf Course ready to catch, tag and release as many wild geese as possible. The group fanned out around the shore waiting for the geese to get on land." Well, guess who the kayakers were who were out in the water herding the geese to land! Tom Feil, Wolf Mueller, and Mike Bills! David P. Volsen, District Wildlife Biologist for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, wrote a letter to WRPC President Skip Johnson expressing his gratitude for WRPC's help with the goose capture on June 18. "We are especially indebted to your paddlers for their help in corralling geese and pushing them onshore for the capture. Literally, we could not have done it without them. Not only did they work hard in the water, they were also willing to grab a goose and assist in processing the birds." Way to go, Tom, Wolf, and Mike!
UPCOMING EVENTS
Spanish Castle. Saturday, July 18 Rendezvous at the boathouse and be ready to leave at 9 a.m. Mark Behler from the Wenatchee Valley Museum accompanies us on a paddle down the Columbia River to the site of an old Spanish castle. Contact Kyle Flick at 662-3333 if interested.
Bridge & Back. Sunday, July 19. Two different events this year! In addition to the annual noncompetitive paddle around the Odebashion Bridge where members give their best guess of their time, WRPC is also doing a competitive "Bridges & Back" where participants will be racing around both the Odebashion and Sellers Bridge. The competitive team will launch at 9 a.m. and a second launch of the noncompetitive group will follow shortly after. Members and nonmembers welcome. Email Loraine Hohnstein at behemut@aol.com with any questions.
Orondo/Daroga to Lincoln Park. Sunday, August 9. This is a noncompetitive event. Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and drinks will be provided. Side dishes are potluck and they can be dropped off at Lincoln Rock State Park prior to proceedings to the 9 a.m. put-in at Orondo River Park (about a mile past Orondo Elementary School off SR97) at 9 a.m. Or if you're interested in a longer paddle, put in at Daroga Park! NEXT WRPC BOARD MEETING WRPC has made some giant strides this year. As you can imagine, there remains a very substantial amount of work to be done on the Annex. Do you have any time, ideas or special skills you could contribute? Or maybe you'd just like to hear firsthand what is happening at this pivotal point in our club's growth? If so, please plan to attend the next board meeting on June 10 at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Log Cabin, corner of Second and Chelan.
THE NEW BOATHOUSE IS NOW AVAILBLE Starting June 1, any member wanting to place a boat into the new "Annex" boathouse can send in their payment and then contact Tom Feil, boat slip manager, for a slip assignment!!! There will be a $75 charge for the first boat and $50 for each additional boat. Anyone who is not already a member will also need to join (or rejoin). Send the payment and membership form if needed for membership or renewal to: WRPC, P. O. Box 3925, Wenatchee, WA 98807. Please make a notation on the form that you are making a payment for storage in the Annex , include the color and type of boat, and your name. After making the payment, contact Tom Feil at 2canoe@charter.net or call 884-3765 for a rack assignment. Any boat needing a large space may require an additional storage fee. Please remember to sign out each time you use any boat from either boathouse. This will be used for placement priority in 2010.
WRPC Runs Jr. R2R Leg with Great Success WRPC ran the water leg of the Junior race, using the Junior boats we procured from the race organizers. The event was a great success and plans are already being made to ensure next year runs even more smoothly. I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the people who made the event such a great day for our valley's youth: Skip Johnson, Stacie Hoiland, Larry Tobiska, Tom Feil, Bob Derry, Loraine Hohnstein, Kim George, Howie Wallace, Rich Buckingham, Mat Lyons, Terry Peters, Scott Kreiter and several other individuals.
While running two practice days and the race day, we heard many requests for more opportunities for youth to have paddling experiences. We'd like to make some offerings this summer. Exposing more youth to paddle sports may eventually lead to having a youth team and coaching.
APPLE CAPITAL CANOE & KAYAK RACE This year was the 11th year of the Apple Capital Canoe & Kayak Race. Although the attendance isn't huge, all attending find it a challenge. We had 12 paddlers and rowers this year. In the longer 14-mile course, there were four paddlers in three boats and one solo female rower from Spokane. Despite Shaun Koos giving everyone a four-minute head start, he was able to catch everybody and finish three minutes ahead of Jim and Allison in a tandem canoe with a winning time of 1:36:05. In the shorter 7-mile course with seven paddlers and one rower, Jason Bartel was the winner in a single rowing shell with a time of 1:07:00. (Jason is new to the club and has been rowing less than a month!) Jason was followed closely with Isak only one minute behind. Finish times for the short course are: Jason Bartel, 1:07:00; Isak Gasi, 1:08:00; Kevin Hall 1:10:00; Glen Frese, 1:15:36; Kathleen Koos and Susan Valaas, 1:15:24; Kim George, 1:15:59. Jim Heinlein stopped at the boat dock. In the longer course, Shaun Koos, 1:36:05; Jim Bauer and Allison, 1:43:02; Tom Feil, 1:48:10 and Pat Johnson, touring. A special thank you goes to Jason's mother who graciously agreed to act as timer for this event. USE OF WRPC BOATS IN OFF-SITE EVENTS Members sometimes ask whether they can use club boats for the Ridge to River event. Unfortunately, the answer is no. WRPC has a policy that no club boats will be loaned out for the R2R event. As much as we would like to accommodate our members, the risk of damage to our boats is too high. ANYBODY? Does anybody have any old paddles they would like to donate to WRPC? The paddles would be used as legs for a coffee table in the Annex loft area. They may possibly be painted, cut, taped, etc. Please contact Kim George at sweetcontent@verizon.net or 782-1193.
LINDSTROM BARN BOAT STORAGE Following are the number of sign-outs by individual or family memberships as of May 16. UPCOMING EVENTS Hanford Reach. Saturday, June 20 This event has been cancelled.
Spanish Castle. Saturday, July 18 Rendezvous at the boathouse and be ready to leave at 9 a.m. Mark Behler from the Wenatchee Valley Museum accompanies us on a paddle down the Columbia River to the site of an old Spanish castle. We may stop at other points along the way to view pictographs or proceed further downstream than the Spanish castle site. Bring your own food and water. Some club boats may be available for use.
Plan to rendezvous at 8:45 at Lincoln Rock. Everyone is welcome. Some club boats may be available for use. Call Kim George at 782-1193 or 679-6247 if you have questions.
Rock Island to Vantage. Saturday, September 19 Thirty miles, all downstream, two-day paddle in sea kayaks or canoes with an overnight primitive camp en route. Much of the west bank is in a scenic natural state with basalt cliffs and sagebrush-covered hills unchanged since David Thompson saw it in 1811 as the first European paddler. Call or email Wolf Mueller at 884-3160 or wmueller@dshs.wa.gov if you're interested. Some club boats may be available for use.
Guano Rocks. Sunday, September 27 This annual event begins at Lincoln Rock State Park and goes out around GuanoRocks and back. You may tour the course at your own pace or you may race the course. Members and nonmembers are welcome. Launch will be at 9 a.m. and snacks will be provided after the event If you haven't been doing the Guano Rocks event, you may want to consider doing so. The distance is not much more than a Bridge and Back from the boathouse. It is a refreshing experience in that it is a new scene and one of the rare opportunities to take the club boats out of the restricted Wenatchee area. Usually we have good conditions this time of year, although, of course we can't make guarantees about the weather. Also, you must make arrangements with someone or yourself to provide a safe means of transporting the boat to Lincoln Rock. Mostly this is a congenial club activity which we hope you will enjoy. Greater numbers of participants make the event more interesting for everyone. Please try it out. Wolf Mueller and Larry Tobiska to coordinate. Call Larry with any questions, 662-3209. Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club Newsletter March 2009
www.wenatcheepaddle.org Message from the PresidentThe need for progress became jointly recognized last week providing the Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club (WRPC) greater ability to serve the community. The Chelan County PUD granted the City of Wenatchee a land use permit for PUD land under a steel building belonging to the City, located at the foot of Ninth Street. The City in turn issued a sub permit to WRPC for occupancy of the steel building.
This bit of real estate choreography will profoundly enrich the Wenatchee Valley’s non-motorized boating community by curbing the acute shortage of canoe, kayak, and rowing equipment storage in close proximity to the Club’s dock location on the Columbia River. Through this permit arrangement, WRPC is a fee-paying tenant and is subject to leasehold taxes and fees just as other city tenant. An additional permit provision requires exterior enhancements to the steel building for compatibility with Walla Walla Point and Riverfront Parks facilities. We have 36 months to comply.
This business arrangement has fostered the ability to offer a venue for greater paddling participation by local individuals, families, groups, schools, colleges and other organizations. WRPC is in full agreement with the PUD and the City to promote our programs for enrichment, basic safety, and education to as many interested parties as possible. WRPC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been providing services to paddlers and rowers in the Valley since 1988. The new permit includes the “Old Barn” and dock trail located in the same Ninth Street area. WRPC and the PUD have collaborated on past grant funding to build the current dock system in use today.
This letter is primarily to offer our gratitude to everyone involved in making this outcome possible: To the participating PUD staff for being so responsive and positive in creating a win-win proposal. To the PUD Commissioners who were deliberate and unanimous in their decision of entrusting this responsibility to us. To the City Executive Staff, the Public Works Department, the Parks Department and the Parks Board for the comprehensive evaluation and relentless energy to finding solutions for this opportunity. Last but not least, to the Mayor and City Council for their unanimous support, encouragement and enthusiasm. Thank you all very much.
Skip Johnson, Board President
Allison Williams, Executive Director for the City of Wenatchee,
receives a unanimous decision from City Council on Permit to WRPC.
Lindstrom Barn Storage Statement
With the Annex quickly becoming available for occupancy by WRPC, boat storage will now be available for all WRPC members. Accordingly, on March 11, the WRPC Board unanimously passed a Lindstrom Barn Storage Statement which provides that boat storage in the Lindstrom Barn can now be more specialized and focused. Six categories were identified for placement in the Lindstrom Barn.
In order of placement priority in the Lindstrom Barn, these categories are: (a) Members who have a severe, permanent disability. Members in the group will receive first placement priority. (b) Knights of the Rack. One member has earned this distinction. (c) Club boats will be third in line for placement in the Lindstrom Barn. (d) One space will be set aside for the current president of WRPC. (e) Members who are 70 or older. (Please contact Tom Feil if you fit into this category.) (f) Frequent Users. These are the members who use the Lindstrom Barn the most, as evidenced by their number of sign-outs each year.
Please go to the wenatcheepaddle.org web site to view the Lindstrom Barn Storage Statement in its entirety.
To determine frequent users, all members’ sign-outs (of any boat in any WRPC club facility) during 2009 are being tabulated. Those members with the highest number of sign-outs will be offered available spaces in 2010. So far, as of March 15, 2009, these results have been tabulated:
Wolf Mueller: 64 sign-outs
Kim George: 30 sign-outs

Bob Derry: 8 sign-outs
Gene Ockinga: 7 sign-outs
Jay Gorham: 6 sign-outs

Much of the west bank is in a scenic natural state with basalt cliffs and sagebrush-covered hills unchanged since David Thompson saw it in 1811 as the first European paddler. Here’s what one WRPC member had to say about this trip in 2007: “Despite a weather forecast which predicted 100 percent chance of rain for September 30, four of us launched from an obscure spot at Columbia Siding in Douglas County. Beautiful conditions prevailed and we stopped at the pictographs (very faint) and Spanish Castle. Lenticular clouds promised a change in the weather and a few miles below Crescent Bar our smooth water conditions were transformed to whitecaps and strong headwinds. We retreated to Tekison Creek and set up camp—and on September 30 paddled the remaining 18 miles or so in a steady rain. The trip would be a fine one in good weather.” Kyle Flick and Wolf Mueller to coordinate this event Call or email Wolf Mueller at 884-3160 or wmueller@dshs.wa.gov if you’re interested. Tips From Members
Doug Harris reports that the Winchester Wasteway between Dodson Road and Potholes Reservoir is peppered with Beaver Dams.
Doug reports portaging around these dams is arduous and time consuming. He guessed there might be as many as thirty in this stretch.
"CHANGES ARE COMING" There’s been many exciting things going on since the last newsletter. We now have some new officers and board members to welcome. WRPC’s new president is Skip Johnson who has been instrumental in working with the City in negotiations for the Boneyard building. We’re still optimistic that WRPC will eventually be able to lease this great building! Both Kyle Flick, our new vice-president, and WRPC’s treasurer Larry Tobiska are busy working with "the experts" to develop written policies which will form the backbone for how we operate in the future. Larry is also busy investigating what type of insurance needs we might have in the future and how best to address these needs. Stacie Hoiland graciously came back again this year to serve as secretary.
Two board members rotated out and WRPC’s two new board members are Kim George and Wolf Mueller. Welcome!
WRPC has a new web site manager, Vitek Siroky. Vitek is a computer guru as well as an excellent photographer. He’s already posted pictures on our web site of the New Years Day Paddle. Check it out! Everyone enjoyed themselves on the river as well as the hot chocolate afterwards. And yes, it was snowing hard, the temperature was 29 degrees, and one member even managed to take an unexpected swim. (Vitek did not, however, post those pictures on the web site.)
Tom Feil is very busy right now. Tom is either a leader or member of at least three different committees and is working hard to make sure WRPC is ready for the changes we’re hoping for in the future. We would like to hit the ground running! If we are fortunate enough to be able to lease the Boneyard from the City, existing boathouse storage policies will be significantly impacted. The Board is currently considering different boat storage proposals that Tom and his committee have developed.
And Ron Johnston-Rodriguez, a relative newcomer to WRPC meetings, has a wealth of ideas and experience he is contributing. Who knows where his unflagging enthusiasm will take us? It’s quite exciting! Ron’s Great Columbia Water Trail program dovetails nicely with many of WRPC’s activities. A REALLY BIG DEAL -- The Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club and the Cascade Canoe and Kayak Club have agreed to become mentors to WRPC. The possibilities here are endless. They will generously share their expertise with us as we become larger and more complex. They’ll be joining us for some of our competitive events. The next newsletter will contain WRPC’s annual Calendar of Events and will provide more details. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be held on January 14 at 7 p.m. at the Log Cabin. (Corner of Second and Chelan) Everybody is welcomed with open arms. Come and see what all the excitement is about! Jr. Ridge to River WRPC is now "the" authority for the paddling leg of Jr. Ridge to River! And WRPC now owns outright the 30 youth-sized kayaks used in the race! This is a great public relations opportunity for our club to serve the community.
Volunteers are needed in kayaks and also standing in the water on both the evening of April 3 (racer training) and on April 4 for the actual race. We will also offer a training session on March 28.
Please consider volunteering during one of these three dates (3/28, 4/3, 4/4). You may contact Mike Bills, Jr. R2R team leader, at agua1@nwi.net. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Enclosed in this newsletter is the annual membership renewal. Renewals are due on or before January 31. If you pay before January 31, please pay the old rate of $50 for an individual or $75 for a family. (New memberships also need to pay the initial one-time fee of $100.) As of January 31, 2009, rates will increase by $25. An individual sending in their renewal after January 31 would need to pay $75. A family sending in their renewal after January 31 should pay $100.)
These renewal applications are also available on the WRPC web site. DONATIONS You can help WRPC and maybe help yourself at the same time by making a special donation. The Club is going to need additional resources to improve the new (used) building we hope to have early this year in order to serve as many boaters as possible. Your special donation will qualify as a tax deductible donation because WRPC is a qualified IRC 501(c)(3) organization. Anybody? Bill Davies is a long-time club member and is looking for a clipper tripper style canoe. 630-0268.
Cash contributions can be made to the "Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club" and sent to Larry Tobiska, Treasurer, 1618 Central Avenue, Wenatchee WA 98801. An appropriate receipt will be mailed to you.

A Recent Seattle Trip
This email from President Skip Johnson gives a flavor of just some of the pieces that are swirling around and coming together for WRPC . . . Sunday Nov. 9, 2008 (6: am – 6: pm) Making the trip to Seattle along with me were - Bob Derry, Tom Feil, Shaun Koos and Linda Stephen. Here is a brief recap of a very informative trip. Meetings were with both the Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club (SCKC) and the Cascade Canoe and Kayak Club, to discuss storage systems and joint club opportunities. First, however, our contingent finished The SCKC 10K Frostbite Regatta on Green Lake. Notably, Shaun teamed with Jordan Malloch, the incoming president of SCKC, as his OC-2 partner. I paddled with their past president, David Bobanick. (David and I provided Shaun and the new Pres with a win for PR purposes) Tom Feil and Linda Stephan displayed their proven SS-2 skills as top finishers in a field of 50 or so boats. Our presence, greeted warmly by all, did provide some extra good will for WRPC. After the race, our entire group met with the SCKC youth team coach - Asim along with other members to discuss the essence of developing a broader paddling community and a competitive team. Insights: (Bob Derry hates not racing) Basic Program elements and suggestions were: Organize Bantam programs for introduction to paddling; ages 8 to 11. Compulsory skill set required to become a team member. Team Recruitment by ages 11 & 12 necessary for skill development to reach National level competitiveness. Equipment mix recommended for developing a team whether it be kayak, canoe or shell are: Singles, Doubles and Four-person. This mix of equipment is utilized for paddlers wanting to reach their full potential. Attached are pictures of the two Cascade Canoe facilities Renton and Bellevue, showing their various storage methods. The Cascade Club has sales and rental programs along with the team boats. Dan Henderson, the owner of Cascade Canoe is a very active coach. He works with his in-house kids, Seattle Pacific University and the UW. He is also working to develop a weeklong summer Camp at the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp for July of “09 that we can piggy back onto. The coach of SCKC is also a Seattle Parks Dept. Employee. He seems to have great membership support as he combines Parks and SCKC programs to keep as many kids going as possible. We now have two terrific entities from which to draw information and support. Both are looking forward to having their kids and members come to Wenatchee next summer for a Regatta to inaugurate our new boathouse and to help encourage greater paddling awareness here in the Wenatchee valley.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, Paddling/Rowing Enthusiast! We've had a great year in the club. We've had a full year of boating-related work with the club, both on and off the water. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to use our new dock. We've also added some new boats this year, and hopefully many of you have had the opportunity to try those out as well. We're continuing to look for other boats to keep our club fleet fresh.
Larry Tobiska spearheaded the effort to get signs on the building. I've heard many comments about how nice they look. They make the boathouse look great and they let people know who we are and how they can contact the club.
The board has been working behind the scenes to create new openings for eventually expanding our boathouse. We are continuing in that vein and have plans to follow through into 2008. Mike Kaputa and I also attended the Comprehensive Chelan County Parks Commission Planning meetings and got our club listed in the plan. This will allow us to apply for several grants in the future when we're closer to getting approval for expansion. The board is seeking new ways to network into the community more to build a broad base of club support.
In 2007 we added a few new club-sponsored activities. We've gotten good feedback on those new events, all of which were noncompetitive. We're adding a few new events to continue in this vein. Please refer to the events section of this newsletter for more details. We're still going to keep a few competitive events that we've traditionally had, such as the Apple Capital and Guano Rocks.
I'd like to thank all the members of our club for their continued support. I'm looking forward to spending quality time on the water this coming year. I hope to see you out there.
Mike Bills
President, WRPC
NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Several board members’ terms expired this year and new board members were elected at the general membership meeting. Please welcome Stacie Hoiland (who graciously agreed to be secretary as well) and Skip Johnson. UPCOMING 2008 EVENTS
2008 Events:
NEW YEARS DAY PADDLE

CRAB CREEK – SATURDAY, APRIL 19
Paddle the pleasant final 18 miles of Washington’s longest creek which features an abundance of water birds, a few stray cows, a strip of riverine habitat surrounded by sagebrush, and one short Class II drop which may result in a refreshing swim. Call Dave Jaecks with any questions, 662-6773.
APPLE CAPITAL MARATHON – SUNDAY, APRIL 27
This event begins at Walla Walla Park at 9 a.m. You may choose to race in the shorter course, approximately seven miles, or you can choose the longer course of approximately 14 miles. You may also choose to tour rather than race. Call Tom Feil with any questions, 884-3765.
HANFORD REACH – SATURDAY, JUNE 21
Experience the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River preserved due to the presence of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation along the west bank. The full reach is 33 miles and overnight camping is restricted so we will do a manageable portion of the reach as a day trip. Class I. Call Dave Jaecks with any questions, 662-6773.

PAST 2007 EVENTS
Midweek Paddle, September 18
Four paddlers took up the challenge and paddled the 15-mile trip from Bebee Park to Daroga Park on a fine September day. We spent about four hours on the river including a lunch break. By Dave Jaecks.
Guano Rocks, September 23
Larry Tobiska 43.29 Scull
Tom Feil/Ron Snyder 46.50 OC-2
Isak Gasi 52.47 C-1
Glen Frese 55.31 Kayak
Vitek Siroky 61.13 Scull
Kelly Beebe 63.25 Sea kayak
Kathleen Koos/Susan Valaas 68.02 OC-2 (touring)
How many years have we done this? I don’t know. But every year it is a fresh, challenging experience.
A person may experience this event on different levels. It can be a race in which you can exhaust yourself trying to finish sooner than another person or to make a personal best. The latter is what I did this year since Shaun Koos beat himself up on a more demanding event the day before and participated only as the starter/photographer/timer. (Thanks, Shaun.)
You know, rowing shells are generally faster than kayaks or surf skis but it all depends on who is paddling/rowing and the level of fitness and determination they have. So it is always interesting to see what shakes out.
Another level on which this event can be enjoyed is the noncompetitive “let’s take pictures and see the sights and get some exercise” level. This was what my friend and first-year rower, Vitek Stroky, did. To his credit, he completed the event in a Maas 24 even though it is his first year rowing.
Tom Feil and Ron Snyder were strong as usual in a double. The inexorable Isak Gasi enjoyed the flat water in that amazing high kneel canoe. Every year Glen Frese gets better and better – always inspiring the rest of us. Kelly Beebe, also a newcomer to the club, had a great time in a kayak, and Kathleen Koos and Susan Valaas had a little problem with the “wait a minute weeds” they picked up around Guano Rocks.
A good day, a good group, and a good time! Join us next year, September 28, for the Guano Rocks Regatta. By Larry Tobiska.
Rock Island to Vantage Paddle, September 29-30
Despite a weather forecast which predicted 100 percent chance of rain for September 30, four of us launched from an obscure spot at Columbia Siding in Douglas County. (The launch below Rock Island Dam is not open.) Beautiful conditions prevailed and we stopped at the pictographs (very faint) and Spanish Castle. Shore stops were minimal because of the rain. Freeman and Allan retrieved the truck from Vantage State Park and rescued Loraine and I at the Vantage Town Boat Launch. The trip would be a fine one in good weather. By Dave Jaecks.
Membership Dues
Please be sure to mail in your membership renewal before January 31, 2008. Even if you just joined part way through 2007, you'll have to renew your dues now. The renewal form is in the link on this site that says Membership Form, and can be mailed to WRPC, P. O. Box 3925, Wenatchee, WA 98807. Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club April 2007 Newsletter MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Well, spring is finally here. This is a great time to begin paddling if you haven’t already paddled over the winter. The WRPC Board has made a commitment to making it easier and much more enjoyable to get out there on the water. We’re replacing several of our old, well-loved boats. We now have a new canoe, sea kayak, and surf ski. The surf ski was donated by Larry Ensley. You may know Larry as an owner of Full Circle Cycle. We’re working on purchasing another recreational kayak and another rowing shell. We’re also keeping our eyes open for a double outrigger canoe. As a member of the club, if you come across a boat that you think might be good, please let a board member know.
I want to take a few lines to acknowledge someone who quietly does a lot for our club, usually unnoticed. There are many club members who volunteer a lot of their personal time to make the club what it is. I’d like to take a moment to notice one of those people. Bob Derry has been doing maintenance work on the club for years. When he notices something that needs to be done, he does it. One morning about a month ago, I went for a paddle and Bob was blowing snow off the dock and trail. Last Saturday he was painting over graffiti on our boathouse and dock. If you see Bob, please let him know we appreciate all he does for us!
See you on the water,
Mike Bills, President
NEW BOATSThere are some new boats in the boathouse!!! Larry Ensley has donated a high performance Chalupski surf ski to the club. The surf ski is named after the world champ in the 80’s, Oscar Chalupski, and was purchased from him in Hawaii and shipped out here. It is 19 feet long, 18 inches wide, and meant for the intermediate to advanced paddler. Thank you, Larry!
Our new canoe is an 18-foot Jensen high-performance recreational canoe. Made by Clipper Canoe, it is a custom Kevlar ultra light lay-up and weighs 40 pounds.
There is a new red Prijon Seayak on the lower level of the boathouse, space 9. This touring kayak is 16 feet long, 24 inches wide, with a Trihedral hull design. It weighs 58 pounds (blow-molded plastic) so you may want to use the wheels that are on the lower level center post. This kayak is meant for beginner to advanced kayakers who weigh between 110 to 225 pounds.
If you’ve never used wheels before to move a heavier kayak, it’s fairly easy. It’s basically just a cradle with wheels and two straps. It is placed closer to the end of the boat—not in the middle. With the wheels attached to one end of the boat, you simply lift the other end and pull the kayak to the dock.
UPCOMING 2007 EVENTS
APPLE CAPITAL MARATHON – SUNDAY, APRIL 29
This is a race we’ve had for several years now. It begins at 9 a.m. at the boathouse. There will be a shorter course, approximately seven miles in length, or you can do the longer course, approximately 14 miles in length. Members and nonmembers are welcome. Call Tom Feil with any questions.
SPANISH CASTLE – SATURDAY, JULY 21
Rendezvous at the boathouse and be ready to leave at 9 a.m. sharp. Last year Mark Behler from the Wenatchee Valley Museum accompanied us on this paddle down the Columbia River and told us of some of the history and legends of what we were seeing during the paddle. There may be strong currents. Bring your own food and water. Everybody is welcome. Call Mike Bills with any questions.
BRIDGE & BACK – SUNDAY, JULY 22
This is a noncompetitive event which begins at 8 a.m. at the boathouse. Each participant is asked to predict how long it will take them to paddle from the dock to Odebashion Bridge and back. Those who come closest to their predicted times are the winners! Mike Nevers is well known for his ability to predict his time within a few seconds and to date is the undisputed reigning champion of this event! Call Loraine Jaecks with any questions.
ORONDO TO LINCOLN PARK FUN PADDLE AND POTLUCK – SUNDAY, AUGUST 12
This has been a popular noncompetitive event. Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and drinks will be provided. Side dishes will be potluck and they can be dropped off at Lincoln Rock State Park prior to proceeding to the 9 a.m. put-in at Orondo River Park (about a mile past Orondo Elementary School on SR 97) at 9 a.m. Plan to rendezvous at 8:45 a.m. at Lincoln Rock. An optional course extension is available; anyone who is interested should meet at Lincoln Rock at 8:15 a.m. This is open to members and nonmembers—nonmotorized boats only. Call Mike or Sherri Nevers with any questions.
GUANO ROCKS – SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
This annual event begins at Lincoln Rock State Park and goes out around Guano Rocks and back. You may tour the course at your own pace or you may race the course. Members and nonmembers are welcome. Launch will be at 9 a.m. and snacks will be provided after the event. Call Larry Tobiska with any questions.
PADLOCK COMBINATION
The padlock combination was changed earlier this month and current members were notified by phone of the new combination. Members have reported instances where kids have come over and checked the combination displayed on the padlock, even while the members were present in the boathouse. Please be extra careful and spin the padlock numbers even if you’re still in the boathouse area.
Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club Newsletter December 2006
President’s Message
I'm humbled by the opportunity to serve as President of WRPC. I've got big shoes to fill. Our club has a long history and has accomplished a lot over the years. We've got a wonderful boathouse facility that is an asset to Riverfront Park. We've completed our dock that makes access to the water easier for many of our members. Too often the old dock was high and dry at low water as the bay continues to fill in with sediment from the stream that flows past the boathouse.
Our next challenge is to replace many of our well-used club boats. Over the years we've gotten a lot of service from many of these but the time has come for their retirement. The board is looking for new boats. The challenge is finding boats that will be durable, useful to the majority of our membership, and a good deal. We've been looking and we will continue to search.
Another challenge is finding an interim way to store more club members' boats until we can eventually build another clubhouse. We have some ideas that we're pursuing and we’ll need creative thinking to help the club meet the needs of more members. If you have ideas, please share them with a board member.
I'm looking forward to a new year of being out on the water, participating in club events, and furthering our club’s growth. As we enter a new year, please remember to complete and mail in the dues/enrollment form. We'll be changing the padlock combination in late February or early March and only those members who have renewed their membership will be notified of the new combination. There's been some confusion about membership renewal in the past; if you joined in 2006, you still have to renew in January 2007 in order to keep your membership active. Renewals are due at the beginning of each new year, not on the anniversary of your joining date.
I wish you a great new year of paddling/rowing!
Mike Bills
President
NEW YEARS DAY PADDLE
WRPC will be holding its annual New Years Day Paddle this year at 10 a.m. Just show up at the boathouse!
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Our annual membership meeting was held November 15, 2006, at Eastmont Junior High. Approximately 18 members were present. Steve Smith reported on everything we’ve accomplished this year—a lot! The past year’s events were recapped and suggestions were made for the upcoming 2007 events. Larry Tobiska, treasurer, reported our current balance is approximately $4500. At our lowest point this year, our treasury balance was as low as $500. We currently have 121 total memberships—72 individual and 49 family. Steve Smith and Loraine Jaecks’ board terms have expired. Kyle Flick was elected to the board and Loraine Jaecks will serve another term. Shaun Koos reported that boat clubs are using cargo containers to store club boats. Signage is being developed to possibly place on the boathouse giving contact information and acknowledging state funding.
In the board meeting which immediately followed the annual membership meeting, new officers were elected. Mike Bills is the new club president. (Steve Smith will continue to attend meetings and intends to remain very much involved.) The new senior vice president is Tom Feil who will also be vice-president for activities. The new secretary will be Kyle Flick. Larry Tobiska will continue as treasurer, Mike Kaputa will continue as project manager, and Loraine Jaecks will continue as newsletter editor. Mike Kaputa presented for consideration a conceptual plan of a new club boathouse being constructed on the bottom floor of a restaurant, to be built in the area of the existing Linden Park parking lot.
BOAT STORAGE
Bob and Linda Parlette have graciously given us permission to use their property located by Walla Walla Point (close to the swimming beach) as a storage site for some of our larger or older club boats. WRPC members, led by Bob Derry, have constructed a covered storage area on the property and the property is fenced on three sides. However, at this time the property is not secure, i.e., no locked entrance. If any WRPC members are interested in perhaps storing their personal boats on this site, please contact Tom Feil at 884-3765. Depending on how many members are interested, further measures may be taken to secure the area and there may be a small storage fee. Any members who choose to store their private boats at this site would need to count on their own insurance to cover any theft or damage. There would be no coverage through WRPC insurance.
BOATHOUSE SECURITY
There have been several instances this year where the boathouse doors were found open. Please be sure the doors are securely locked when you leave!!! Additionally, padlock combinations are not to be shared with nonmembers!!!
SOUND ROWERS
WRPC member Ron Snyder is hoping to find people interested in attending some of the Sound Rowers races with him next year. Below is a tentative schedule of their races copied from their web site, soundrowers.org. Level 1 is an easier race, Level 2 is intermediate, Level 3 is rough waters, possibly restricted participation. If any of you are interested in attending any of these events, please contact Ron Snyder at 884-5432 or 670-1809.
